Are we now being charged for subscriptions?

Or do we have our original purchase and the new templates are subscription base?

In mere minutes I was not happy with the new update, it kept crashing until I reinstalled then I saw the subscription info.
My blood boiled, but it looks like that is a separate independent upgrade but I want to make sure that there isnt any hidden info on payment.
This subscription service that developers are switching to is a turn off. 50 bucks a year for this?
